About Healthy Living Centres

Oasis Community Learning is committed to community regeneration. It is for this reason that we are involved with the development of schools that have an extended and holistic approach. We are committed to the Every Child Matters agenda – believing that it is only having a 360-degree understanding of a child and their life within the context of the wider community that real education for life can be achieved.

For us, the need for education and healthcare to work together to achieve this outcome is crucial.

A key characteristic of the proposed HLCs will be the goal of engaging the most hard to reach within the community, with the most deep-seated health and social problems. We therefore recognise that although it will need a physical base on site, some of its work will be virtual (i.e. outreach work within the wider community).

Pre-industrial societies often adopted an holistic approach to human health and happiness. More recently, we believe that our society has forgotten the connections between:

the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and physical well-being
the mental, emotional and spiritual sides of our nature and our physical health
the needs of others, and our own needs.

These issues, and many more, should be addressed, not only through the curriculum and wider activities of the Academy itself, but through our healthy living centre. Our goal is to help build the social capital of the area through improving a sense of well-being, to bequeath to the next generation a better world and to encourage an increase in economic stability within the local community.
