Today, academy students welcomed, local supporters and dignitaries to a special community reception for the official opening Oasis Academy Sholing.
This September the Sholing Technology College joined the Oasis Community Learning family of academies, alongside the existing Oasis academies in the city, Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill and Oasis Academy Mayfield.
Rev Steve Chalke MBE, the Founder and leader of the multi-national community charity Oasis, was guest of honour, invited to conduct the formalities and cut the ribbon with help from the youngest and eldest students at the Academy.
After the community reception, Rev Steve Chalke addressed the student body at special assemblies on what it means to be an Oasis academy, having a strong commitment to community and a place where everyone is included. Where the development of character is a fundamental foundation for academic progress, and where teachers strive to provide eachstudent with the opportunities they deserve to achieve.
Commenting on the event, Martin Brown, Principal of Oasis Academy Sholing, says, “Today is an exciting day for our school community, students, teachers and staff alike. Oasis Academy Sholing builds on firm foundations, and together we move forward with enthusiasm and excitement for the future development of the Academy."
“Our thanks to Steve for his inspirational address to the students, and for our many supporters in the local community who joined us for this important milestone.”
Phil Humphreys, Oasis’s Regional Director for the South Coast, adds, “We are thrilled to welcome Oasis Academy Sholing into the Oasis Community Learning Trust, and more locally into our South Coast region.”
“Together the teachers and staff of Oasis Academy Sholing, Lord’s Hill and Mayfield will be working closely together to support one another to develop and progress, so that we create exceptional teaching and learning environments for our young people.”
Rev Steve Chalke MBE, Founder of Oasis, said: “What a privilege and an honour it has been to join the students of Oasis Academy Sholing for the opening today today. Over thirty years ago when my wife and I began the Oasis charity with transforming vision for communities, I would not have allowed myself to imagine that one day I would be at the opening of our fifty-first academy.”
“While today is a day of celebration, we take our responsibilities to serve the young people of this school, and future generations of students across Southampton very seriously. I look forward to visiting with them and the staff here again in the near future.”
