Oasis Academy Aspinal are celebrating after being awarded the Gold Rights Respecting School Award by UNICEF UK! The prestigious recognition highlights the academy’s commitment to encouraging and applying a culture of inclusivity, equality, and respect for children’s rights, ensuring that every pupil feels valued and empowered.

The award signifies that Oasis Academy Aspinal has embedded the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into its policies, practices, and school culture. In their report, UNICEF advisors commended the academy for its strong focus on children's rights and its dedication to ensuring that pupils not only understand their own rights but also promote the rights of others, both locally and globally.

Ms S Hardy, Year 1 Teacher, PHSE & Hub Lead, led the academy on their journey from initially gaining the Bronze award to Silver and now Gold. Her passion for developing and embedding the rights has been fundamental to enabling the academy to achieve this accreditation.

Some highlights from the report include:

  • Confident children who clearly know that they have rights and are committed to helping to realise these for other children locally and globally.”
  • Community partnerships are a strength of the school.”
  • “Diversity is explicit throughout the whole curriculum. Pupils can see their own heritage reflected throughout the curriculum in a variety of ways.”

Principal, Ms A Sweeting, commented on the achievement, “We are absolutely thrilled to have been awarded the Gold Rights Respecting School Award. This accomplishment reflects the hard work of our staff, pupils, and the wider academy community. It’s about more than just an award – it’s a commitment to making sure that children know their rights and responsibilities, and that they grow up in a school environment that nurtures respect, fairness, and kindness.”

The Gold Award represents the highest level of UNICEF UK’s Rights Respecting Schools programme, which over 4,800 schools across the country participate in. The programme has been shown to have a positive impact on school culture, enhancing student wellbeing, improving behaviour, and fostering a sense of global citizenship among young people.

Join us in congratulating Oasis Academy Aspinal for achieving this wonderful accreditation!
