Celebrations as planning approval given for Oasis Academy Temple Quarter
Oasis Academy Temple Quarter has been granted planning consent, marking a key milestone in the project to deliver a much-needed new secondary school for children in Central East Bristol.
The 1600-place school is part of a wider project to regenerate land on Silverthorne Lane and will include new homes, offices and learning space for the University of Bristol.
Bristol City Council unanimously approved plans for the Silverthorne Lane Development in 2020 but had to refer the decision to the then Secretary of State for housing, communities and local government, Robert Jenrick, before issuing the permission, due to an objection from the Environment Agency.
The application was ‘called-in’, triggering a public inquiry which took place in May 2021. The Inspector recommended that the scheme should be approved, and the Minister of State for Housing agreed, resulting in the permission being issued on the 13th April 2022.
The academy is forecasted to open in its permanent building in September 2025 subject to achieving further milestones, and work is now underway preparing the site for construction.
To meet the need for school places from September 2023, the Department for Education and Bristol City Council is working towards opening the school in temporary accommodation on a site at Spring Street, Bristol, BS3 4PZ.
John Murphy, Chief Executive Officer at Oasis Community Learning commented saying; “We are delighted that planning consent has been granted for the Silverthorne Lane Development – which will be home to Oasis Academy Temple Quarter.”
“This is a fantastic milestone, and we are proud to be the chosen education provider for the new school. Oasis is dedicated to ensuring that in every community we serve, we offer an outstanding education for local young people. We are thrilled to be celebrating with the community involved.”
