The young members of Oasis Academy Fir Vale’s student parliament had the opportunity to meet their local representative today as Gill Furniss MP visited Oasis Academy Fir Vale. During her visit, Ms Furniss spoke with parents, pupils and staff.

Upon her arrival to the Academy’s Community Hub, Ms Furniss met with parents to talk about their experience of living in Page Hall community, raising some concerns regarding housing and the cost-of-living crisis as well as sharing their hopes and ambitions for their area.

Ms Furniss was welcomed by Hub leader Jade Wilkes, who explained exciting plans for the Hub and how these plans fit with the needs of the local community. Some of the ideas that were covered during their meeting included opportunities for volunteering, seeking funding to run workshops, educational youth groups and employability classes.

The student parliament of Oasis Academy Fir Vale, then had their chance to speak with Ms Furniss about what it is like to attend the Academy, and to share ideas on how to promote online safety for pupils.

Principal of Oasis Academy Fir Vale, Helen Round, commented: “We are very grateful to Ms Furniss for taking the time to visit Oasis Academy Fir Vale to meet with our pupils and parents, and to hear about our Community Hub plans. Our student parliament had lots of exciting ideas to share and questions to ask, and really enjoyed the session.”

Hub Leader, Jade Wilkes, commented: “We are so excited about the launch of our community space, and about the opportunity it will provide for our parents and the local. It has already been great to see families coming along to the health café and Friday breakfast Zumba sessions!”

“The pupils shared their interest in the promotion of online safety due to their own experience of social media, and it is admirable that they wanted to raise awareness regarding this issue with their local MP.”
