Oasis pupils celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday!

This week, pupils at Oasis Academy Bank Leaze marked the birthday of Sir David Attenborough by stepping into the role of wildlife filmmakers and creating their own nature documentaries, inspired by the legendary broadcaster’s distinctive approach and lifelong dedication to protecting the natural world.

The celebration began with a birthday cake shared alongside a cardboard cut‑out of Sir David himself, before the Year 4 pupils set to work researching and creating short documentaries on a range of animals. Using thoughtful narration and carefully chosen facts, the children demonstrated both their creativity and their growing understanding of nature.

One pupil’s film focuses on the axolotl, a rare amphibian native to lakes near Mexico City that appears to smile thanks to the upward curve of their mouths and their broad, flat facial structure.

Another pupil focused on ferret, a small, domesticated mammal that can sleep up to 18-20 hours a day and perform a ‘war dance’ when they are happy and excited.

Narrated in his classic documentary style, the videos showcase how Oasis Academy Bank Leaze’s pupils have absorbed Sir David Attenborough’s storytelling techniques that have helped make him such an influential voice in environmental education.

Activities like this reflect Oasis’s commitment to environmental consciousness and to nurturing curiosity about the world around us.
