Oldham school and mosque raise money for earthquake appeal
Local communities in Oldham were devasted to learn about the recent earthquakes that have hit Turkey and Syria, which have affected a massive number of people, leaving them without shelter, food, and water.
Oasis Academy Clarksfield’s Hub Leader, Erica Philburn, organised a number of fundraising activities for the primary school pupils in order to raise as much money as they could, and to raise awareness for the significant ordeal. Fundraising events were advertised to parents/carers and staff via the Hub’s social media account.
The activities included a non-uniform day for pupils, in which they were asked to bring in a £1 donation. The Hub also collected a huge variety of cakes from ‘Park Cakes’ for the bake sale, which staff at the school then hosted in the playground in the afternoon. The school came together and raised an amazing turnover of more than £850. The school are hosting a second bake sale in hopes to raise more money on 2nd March.
Erica liaised with Mr Azad Hussain, a member of the Hub and Bilal Jamia Masjid (Mosque) attendee, to organise the bake sale and fundraising day. The team at Bilal Jamia Masjid (Mosque) said: “thank you to the staff, parents, students and families at Oasis Hub and Oasis Academy Clarksfield for their hard work and fundraising efforts for the Turkiye (Turkey) and Syria Earthquake Appeal. This is very much appreciated. You helped raise £859.77.” Imam Fazail Ahmed Sialvi, from Bilal Jamia Masjid, will be flying out to Turkey himself to help out.
As Hub lead of Oasis Academy Clarksfield, Erica said: “I am working to develop the relationship between school and the community to really enhance community links. We feel deep sympathy towards the families in Turkey and Syria who have lost their homes and loved ones, and those affected by the disaster here in the U.K. We hope our contribution aids reaching those who desperately need it.”
Deputy Principal of Oasis Academy Clarksfield, Rebecca Morrish, commented: “As a school we see the importance in helping others. Miss Philburn as our Hub lead at the Academy organised a number of fundraisers to raise as much money as we could as a school. We are really keen on working with the community and Bilal Jamia Masjid Mosque, particularly to fundraise for something as significant as the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, so that we can make a difference together.”
