Oldham Students Triumph in Manchester Micro-Tyco Competition

In a remarkable display of teamwork and passion, a group of students at Oasis Academy Oldham have won the prestigious Micro-Tyco competition in Manchester. The international challenge, organised by the ‘WildHearts Group’, co-ordinated a workshop which provides students with real-world business experience whilst inspiring a new generation of socially conscious entrepreneurs.

The victorious team comprised of 10 students who used the sustainable development goal of ‘life under water’ to form their project. Students used their initiative and prior Geography knowledge to invent a local, national, and global plan to tackle pollution in our rivers and coral bleaching. Their winning idea revolved around a river filter to eradicate plastic pollution and probiotic yogurt to help encourage coral regrowth.

The competition was hosted by Siemens, as students had to present their ideas against other schools. A judges panel of 4 sustainable entrepreneurs awarded the students with the winning trophy due to their ‘fierce dedication to sustainability’ with ‘fantastic global and economic links'.  

Throughout the competition, the students received support from Siemens mentors. “Our mentors helped us work as a team and pull all of our ideas together,” said Irene, Year 10. “They taught us how to navigate challenges and think strategically.”

The team’s achievement has brought pride to Oasis Academy Oldham. Head of Humanities, Miss MacAdams, praised the students for their dedication and innovative thinking: “The students have set a remarkable example for their peers. They’ve shown that with creativity, teamwork, and a commitment to positive change, young people can achieve extraordinary things.”
