One of our dedicated Community Leaders, Paul Murray, was recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award during a special ceremony at Swale House on Tuesday 14th May. The award, presented by retiring Mayor, Cllr Sarah Stephen at the Swale Civic Awards, celebrates Paul’s nearly five decades of impactful work on the Isle of Sheppey.

Paul began his career as a middle school PE and Humanities teacher after graduating from Durham University with a degree in History. Paul started working at Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey when it first opened 15 years ago and has since been instrumental in fostering community engagement and support initiatives. Notably, Paul was awarded an MBE in the 2011 New Year’s Honour List for his services to education.

Paul is best known for his contributions in raising awareness about dementia. He regularly organises and hosts ‘dementia café’s,’ involving students from Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey, which led to the Hub receiving the Alzheimer's Society National Award in 2018.

Reflecting on this achievement, Paul said “My proudest moment at Oasis so far has been when the Hub was awarded with the Alzheimer’s National Society Award, this was probably the peak of my career as a Community Leader.”

Additionally, Paul has played a crucial role in organising the local Parkrun, which is celebrated in the local community for its vibrant atmosphere. Set up by the Sheppey Community Development Forum, Paul has assisted with around 140 parkruns!

Among Paul’s favourite experiences at Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey are the daily breakfast clubs with students. Paul stated “The kids are smashing; they are a joy to engage with. Our kids on the island are often misrepresented, but they are brilliant, and it’s because of them that the academy has been recognised for the community work they do in Swale, Kent and beyond.”

Our CEO John Barneby commented on Paul’s achievements, “Paul’s commitment to the community and his dedication to the students and families at Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey is truly inspiring. His work has helped our students become involved in meaningful projects in their community, which exemplifies the values and ethos of Oasis. Thank you, Paul, for making a difference in the lives of others.”

Founder, Rev. Steve Chalke also said “Paul Murray embodies the passionate spirit of Oasis with his unwavering dedication to improving lives. His work has touched countless individuals, and we are incredibly proud to have him as part of the Oasis family.”
