A local primary school in the heart of Gillingham, Kent took park in a staged election for a pupil to become principal for the day as part of UK Parliament Week.
Oasis Academy Skinner Street had a special visit from Habib Tejan, Mayor of Medway who joined staff and pupils to announce the winner of the school election to see who would become principal for the day.
UK Parliament Week is an annual festival that engages people from across the UK with their UK Parliament, explores what it means to them and empowers them to get involved. This year, UK Parliament Week ran from 2nd – 8th November 2019.
Victoria Richmond, Principal at Oasis Academy Skinner Street, said; “The children are hearing people talk about politics at the moment, we want to teach them about democracy and the role of Parliament and MPs. We have used UK Parliament resources to teach them.”
During Parliament Week, children were given the opportunity to apply in writing to become principal for the day and the applicants were shortlisted to five.
The selected five had to do a speech in front of all the pupils, staff and the Mayor or Medway stating why they should be selected for the very important role of principal.
After the speeches from the five pupils took place, the academy then had the opportunity to complete a ballot slip vote for their favourite.
Skye Ramsell, Pupil at Oasis Academy Skinner Street, and also the winner of ‘principal for the day’ said; “It has been a brilliant week, and to win the votes of my friends and other pupils to become principal for the day I am very happy. I was given a certificate and a principal’s award.”
Habib Tejan, Mayor of Medway, added; “It was a privilege and an honour to partake in Oasis Academy Skinner Streets parliament week to witness democracy in action. The pupils and staff were fantastic! Excellent school, great moments, and well done Skye for winning the election.
Last year almost one million people took part in over 8,000 events across the country for UK Parliament Week.
