The Lord Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Valerie Laurent, opened the newly refurbished community hub in Harefield. Community members gathered for the event which marked the re-opening following the work done by Oasis Hub East Southampton to rejuvenate the centre.

Oasis Hub East Southampton serves the communities of East Southampton striving to help people of all ages and situations feel included and to know that they can contribute. We’re passionate about building a movement of volunteers, parents and residents who work together to radically transform our society, creating a community where everyone is in, where everyone is valued, where everyone thrives and enjoys life in all its fullness.

Hub Leader, Karen Dawkins, thanked the Lord Mayor for opening the event and said:

“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Lord Mayor for being with us today, underscoring the significance of this momentous occasion. Your support is invaluable as we embark on this journey to serve our community.”

Karen also thanked the businesses and volunteers who had generously supported the project: “I must also express my heartfelt appreciation to all the volunteers who have dedicated their time, effort, and passion to refurbish this centre. Your unwavering commitment has transformed this space into a vibrant hub of hope and opportunity for all who enter its doors.”

“We have been blown away by the generosity of the companies and organisations that have wonderfully contributed to the refurbishment of this centre. Your partnership and investment in our community exemplify the spirit of corporate social responsibility and demonstrate the power of collaboration in creating positive change.”

Wickes in Hedge End provided a new kitchen, paint and decorating materials for the centre and Mountain Logistics generously provided new signage.

The opening was attended by the local community, as well as several city councillors, such as Councillor Darren Paffey, who joined the celebration event and said:

“This is great news for the people of Harefield, and it was great to meet the team today who have put so much effort into making this space so welcoming and attractive. I’m looking forward to seeing all that happens here in the future.”

The centre was previously run by SO18 Big Local, which is now winding up its work in the area following investment of £1.1 million in the community over the past 10 years.
