Balancing Passion and Pressure: How I Stay Motivated as a Teacher
Balancing Passion and Pressure: How I Stay Motivated as a Teacher

Staying motivated as a teacher and tackling demotivation over the last twenty or so years has been possible because I follow a set of golden rules.

  1. Purpose

Each day, on my way to work, I remind myself of my purpose and why I became a teacher in the first place.  I am driven by the desire to make a difference to students’ lives, ensuring they have access to every opportunity that I was exposed to. We call this ‘levelling the playing field’, which means providing everyone with an equal chance to succeed.

  1. Goals

I set myself a goal for each week and each term.  As a new Principal at Oasis Academy Enfield, my long-term objective is to build relationships with the students and staff so we can all work together to provide the highest quality of education.  I break this down into shorter goals, such as having at least two conversations each day about students’ learning experiences and how we can improve them. This focus on improvement keeps me motivated.

  1. Praise and rewards

You always feel better when you receive positive feedback, but just as powerful is the act of recognising and giving positive feedback to others. Recognising when someone has done a good job, or succeeded in a task serves as a reminder of the positive impact of our work, which is extremely motivating.

  1. Self-care and support

At all stages/phases of life, it is important to look after yourself and find time to take care of yourself.  I achieve this through mindful practices, exercise, and spending time with my children.  Over the years I have learned that when you take care of yourself, you have the energy to keep going, maintaining motivation each day to make a positive difference.

  1. Reflection

Taking time to recognise the great work you have accomplished- be it over the day, week, month, or year- is essential. Reflecting on how many lives you have changed for the better, and the stories you have reframed as a teacher can be incredibly fulfilling. This practice of reflection will also help in overcoming challenges, as it encourages continuous learning and growth. Every day is different, every day is an opportunity to learn and grow.

By following these golden rules, I stay motivated in my teaching career, striving to make a meaningful impact in the lives of my students.
